Directors: Tim Hetherington & Sebastian Junger
The film explores the year that Junger and Hetherington spent in Afghanistan on assignment embedded with the Second Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in the Korengal valley.
I started this movie thinking it would be yet another "isn't war terrible"-sort of documentary, and it was that...partially. It was also reminiscent of Jarhead, in the "war can be boring" aspect. But then around the halfway point when someone dies (it's a war doc; don't you DARE call it a spoiler) and one of his fellow soldiers completely breaks down, it takes a different turn and comes into its own as a film. Not my favorite of the Oscar docs, but certainly worth a watch. A-
